European Commission Implements Plan to Ease Freight Traffic

The European Commission has set in motion a cargo transport action plan to ease international freight traffic in Europe. The plan will open up rail corridors and cut red tape for ships moving between EU ports.

The basis of the plan is to create international maritime and rail transport corridors dedicated to freight and cargo traffic and have containers of similar sizes loaded smoothly, whether onto ships, trains or trucks.

"Europe must place itself at the cutting edge of the logistical chain," said EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot.

The Commission hopes the plan will promote innovative technologies and practices, improve freight management, ease the building of the freight transport chain and simplify administrative procedures.
